Wimbledon’s environment-positive approach

Presented as part of SEA’s Shared Ground webinar on sustainable fan travel, Hattie Park, Sustainability Manager at the All England Club, introduces Wimbledon’s approach to environmental sustainability and its ambition to inspire positive change through sport.

Wimbledon’s Environment Positive Framework brings together four priorities: reducing emissions, supporting nature, improving resource efficiency and using its influence to inspire wider action.

Hattie discusses progress in reducing Wimbledon’s operational emissions, while acknowledging the larger challenge of addressing emissions associated with fan travel. She also explains how Wimbledon makes environmental action visible, relatable and accessible to visitors during The Championships.

Examples include:

  • Showing decarbonisation in practice, through an electrified building with rooftop solar and information explaining how it works.

  • Connecting visitors with nature, through downloadable guides that help them explore the biodiversity around Wimbledon.

  • Supporting more sustainable journeys, through a travel planner that helps visitors compare routes and understand their environmental impact.

At the heart of the approach is a positive, practical message: show people what action looks like and help them take part.

A useful introduction for sporting organisations looking to connect their environmental priorities with the fan experience.
