Why fan travel matters

Presented as part of SEA’s Shared Ground webinar on sustainable fan travel, Jon Foley, Director of In the Round, explores how the way fans get to and from an event affects ticket sales, the fan experience, local communities and an event’s carbon footprint.

Drawing on examples from Wembley Stadium, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and Boston’s 2026 FIFA World Cup matches, Jon examines how better fan travel planning can deliver commercial, operational and environmental benefits.

The presentation covers:

  • Planning transport as part of venue capacity, recognising how travel options influence attendance and spending.

  • Making public transport, walking and cycling easier choices, through clear information, journey planning and integrated ticketing.

  • Communicating with fans early, with consistent travel advice from ticket purchase through to the journey home.

  • Reducing congestion, by encouraging earlier arrivals and later departures.

  • Bringing the right people together, including venues, event organisers, transport operators, councils and local communities.

  • Making better use of existing services before investing in additional infrastructure.

A practical resource for clubs, venue managers, event organisers and councils looking to improve the spectator journey and reduce travel-related emissions.
