Personalised travel planning with You. Smart. Thing.

Presented as part of SEA’s Shared Ground webinar on sustainable fan travel, Alex Townsend from You. Smart. Thing. explores how personalised travel advice can improve the fan experience, support lower-carbon journeys and help venues plan more effectively.

Through examples from Wimbledon and other major sporting events, followed by a live demonstration, Alex shows how the Travel Assistant brings together public transport, event-specific services and detailed venue access information.

The presentation covers:

  • Helping fans compare their options, with journey times, estimated carbon emissions and combinations such as rail, shuttle buses and park and ride.

  • Supporting accessible journeys, with advice tailored to ticket types, accessible entrances and designated drop-off points.

  • Engaging fans before they travel, through personalised links in ticketing emails, websites and other event communications, without requiring an app download.

  • Using travel planning data, to understand expected routes, arrival times and transport choices, informing operations and resourcing.

  • Creating further opportunities to engage fans, including relevant event information, offers and services throughout their journey.

The Wimbledon demonstration shows how this works in practice, guiding visitors from their starting point to the appropriate venue entrance.

A central theme is the importance of trusted communication: travel advice should feel like part of the event experience, delivered through channels fans already recognise.
