Game, Set, Green: Wimbledon’s Commitment to Sustainability
While the tennis world turns its eyes to Centre Court each July, Wimbledon continues to lead off-court as well - setting a global benchmark for sustainability in sport.
As part of its long-term Environment Positive strategy, The All England Club is taking meaningful action to reduce its environmental impact and inspire change across the broader tennis community. The goal is ambitious: to be net zero carbon, nature positive, and part of a truly circular economy.
Key Focus Areas
1. Cutting Emissions
Wimbledon is committed to reducing carbon emissions across its operations, from travel and logistics to food and energy. In 2023, the event achieved a 43% reduction in emissions intensity (per £m revenue) compared to its 2019 baseline, putting it on track to meet its 2030 net zero target.
2. Eliminating Waste
Eliminating single-use plastics and prioritising reusables are central to Wimbledon’s approach. Initiatives include reusable cups, water refill stations, and closed-loop recycling systems. In 2023, 97% of waste was diverted from landfill, with over half reused or recycled.
3. Enhancing Nature
Nature and biodiversity are deeply valued in the Wimbledon Park landscape. The Club is investing in enhancing local biodiversity through tree planting, habitat creation, and sustainable landscaping — including a commitment to increase biodiversity by 10% across their future Wimbledon Park Project.
4. Inspiring Action
Wimbledon knows the power of sport to influence and inspire. The Club is working with partners, suppliers, fans, and players to drive change across the tennis ecosystem, including through education, procurement practices, and storytelling.
A Model for the Sporting World
Wimbledon’s approach reflects a growing recognition that sporting organisations not only have a responsibility to reduce their footprint - they also have an opportunity to lead. As a proud platform watched by millions, the tournament is proving that climate leadership can be embedded into the heart of major sporting events.
At Sports Environment Alliance, we celebrate and support bold environmental action in sport. Wimbledon’s progress is a reminder that with the right strategy, collaboration and ambition, we can all play our part in creating a cleaner, greener future.
