FISU Oceania joins SEA

Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) is delighted to welcome FISU Oceania as its newest member.

FISU Oceania is the governing body of university sport in Oceania. It was founded in 2008 as a FISU initiative to promote the advancement of university student sports programs at the Oceania regional and international level.

FISU Oceania believes that sport has the power to initiate change and influence individuals who participate in it. As the newest member of SEA, FISU Oceania is dedicated to supporting its university members and communities in their sustainable initiatives, while raising awareness about the impacts of climate change.

FISU Oceania President David Schmude said that with the Oceania region being significantly affected by climate change, the organisation sees an opportunity for the region to lead by example.

“We are committed to being an active contributor to help sport achieve net zero by 2050,” he said.

Mr Schmude also explained that at the core of FISU Oceania's sustainability efforts lies its comprehensive sustainability policy.

“This policy serves as a guiding framework for the organisation's investment in impactful projects throughout the Oceania region.

“Moreover, FISU Oceania mandates event host locations to implement sustainability plans that prioritise the principles of reduction, reuse, recycling, and repurposing. By incorporating these measures, FISU Oceania ensures that its events contribute to the overall sustainability goals,” he said.

As a member of the United Nations Sport for Climate Action FISU Oceania is also actively developing a sustainable toolkit for its national university sport federations, empowering them with the necessary resources to implement environmentally responsible practices and has begun formulating a robust sustainability plan.

In welcoming FISU Oceania as a new member, SEA CEO Jan Fitzgerald commended the organisation’s commitment to sustainability in and through sport.

“FISU Oceania’s passion will contribute to our collective efforts in creating a more environmentally responsible sporting industry. Together, we will continue to drive positive change and inspire others to embrace sustainable practices. FISU Oceania's dedication to educating their network and investing in impactful projects aligns perfectly with SEA's values, and we look forward to working together to achieve our shared vision," she said.
