At last night’s official Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) launch event, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, over 100 sport, and environment, industry guests celebrated the milestone announcement of SEA’s Foundation Members. Foundation Members represent the pillars for which SEA will be supported.  These sport organisations are the first to commit to establishing the knowledge and networks, needed, to empower Australasian sport industry stakeholders to become environmental stewards.

The following sport organisations have made, and will continue to make, enduring and significant contributions as SEA’s Foundation Members: the Melbourne Cricket Club/Melbourne Cricket Ground, Greater Western Sydney Giants FC, Netball Australia, Cricket Australia, Australian Football League, Tennis Australia, South Australian Cricket Association, Victoria Racing Club and Golf Australia.

“As an industry leader and a community-minded club, we welcome the formation of the Sports Environment Alliance and look forward to discussing the challenges and opportunities we face with other organisations,” said Stephen Gough, CEO of the Melbourne Cricket Club.

Julian Sullivan, CEO of the Victoria Racing Club, added, “the VRC and Flemington are tremendously proud to be a founding partner of this innovative alliance.  Working with our fellow members we look forward to using sport to further sustainability in Australia.”

Gillon McLachlan, CEO of the AFL, highlighted the important role the AFL will play in conjunction with SEA,  “Australian Football is our country’s only Indigenous sport and largest professional game in the country.  Wherever possible, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and our carbon footprint.  We encourage AFL fans and fans of all sports to be aware of their own environmental impact and to work together for a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future.”

As Dr. Sheila Nguyen, Executive Director of SEA, emphasised at the launch event, “SEA is grateful to have Foundation Members who recognise the powerful role that sport can play in protecting our natural environmental assets.  Our Foundation Members truly are the ground we walk on, the sun that warms us, and the air we breathe.  We will achieve great outcomes with their support.”
